The visa application paradox

Almost every consulate — French, German, Canadian, British — asks for proof of travel: a round-trip itinerary showing when you enter and leave. The same consulates then advise, in writing, not to buy a non-refundable ticket until the visa is approved.

  1. The embassy demand. A flight itinerary is on nearly every checklist, and VFS or BLS staff look for it when they check your file.
  2. The financial risk. Buy a ₹80,000 ticket and get refused or delayed, and the money is gone. A fully refundable fare costs two or three times more and blocks lakhs on your card.

The solution: a dummy ticketA real airline reservation held in your name without payment. It gives the embassy the proof of reservation it asks for, at ₹599 / $7 per passenger, with no fare at risk.

What a flight dummy ticket actually is

A dummy ticket — also called a flight reservation, flight itinerary or blocked ticket — is a legitimate reservation on a real flight, created but not paid for.

How it works behind the scenes

The booking is made in a Global Distribution System (GDS) such as Amadeus, Sabre or Galileo — the same network airlines and travel agents use. The system creates a Passenger Name Record, a six-character PNR, which holds your seat for a period the airline controls: usually a few days, up to about two weeks.

Key termsPNR — the booking reference (e.g. E5K9J2). Itinerary — the PDF showing flight numbers, dates and times. GDS — the airline reservation network the booking lives in. No e-ticket number is issued, so the reservation cannot be used to board.

Vital warning: dummy ticket vs fake ticket

Not all dummy tickets are the same. A generator PDF has no reservation behind it; submitting one can mean refusal for false documents and, in some cases, a ban.

The officer's testOfficers open Manage Booking on the airline site and enter your PNR and surname. A held reservation shows the itinerary. A generator PDF shows nothing — and the file is flagged.

Use cases by country

Schengen visa (27 countries)

  • Requirement: a round-trip flight reservation.
  • Detail: dates must match your insurance and hotel booking exactly.
  • Timing: processing takes about 15 days, so order 1–3 days before your VFS or BLS appointment so the PNR is live when the file is opened.

Canada and USA

Canada (visitor visa / TRV): the IRCC portal has an upload slot for proof of travel; an itinerary there supports the case that you will leave Canada.

USA (B1/B2): the interview is in person, but a printed itinerary answers the "when and for how long" questions cleanly and shows a planned trip.

Onward travel proof for visa-free destinations

Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Dubai and Bali admit Indian passport holders on arrival or with an eVisa — but check-in staff will refuse boarding without a return or onward ticket. A held reservation satisfies that check.

Five expert tips for visa success

1. Timing

Holds expire; the airline decides when, usually within a few days to about two weeks. Do not order two weeks before your appointment — order 1–3 days before it.

2. Match the dates exactly

If the itinerary says you arrive on the 10th and the hotel starts on the 11th, that is a red flag. Flight, hotel and insurance dates must agree with the application form.

3. Never write "dummy" in official documents

In your cover letter call it a flight reservation, flight itinerary or proof of onward travel.

4. Use major airlines

Reservations are made on carriers with reliable Manage Booking pages — Emirates, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa, Air India — so an officer can verify quickly. Most budget airlines do not hold seats.

5. Verify it yourself

Take the PNR from your PDF, open the airline's Manage Booking page, enter it with your surname and see the itinerary live before your appointment.

Frequently asked questions

Is a dummy ticket legal?

Yes. Embassies ask for a reservation or itinerary, not a paid ticket. Holding a reservation is a standard airline and travel-agent feature; as long as the PNR is real it is a legitimate document.

How long does the PNR remain valid?

The airline decides. Holds usually stay live from a few days up to about two weeks. Order 1–3 days before your appointment so it is active when checked.

Can I use it as proof of onward travel at the airport?

Yes, this is a common use. Verify the PNR on the airline website shortly before you travel, because check-in staff look it up live.

Do the tickets look real?

They are real reservations, so the PDF is the airline-format itinerary with flight numbers, dates, terminals, baggage allowance and passenger names.

What if my visa is rejected?

You lose only the ₹599 / $7 fee, not the price of a full ticket. That is the whole point of using a reservation before the decision.

Can I choose the dates?

Yes — you enter the exact dates on the booking form and the reservation is issued exactly as entered. Check everything before paying; a different date needs a fresh order.
